Investigating Local Government: A Poynter / IRE Hands-On Seminar Sep 16, 2013 - Sep 20, 2013 Apply By:  Aug 12, 2013

The low $300 tuition for this seminar is made possible by a generous grant from The Buck Foundation.

Join The Poynter Institute and Investigative Reporters and Editors for an intensive, practical hands-on workshop to teach journalists how to investigate and report on their local governments. The workshop is especially focused toward newsrooms that do not have big budgets or staffs to produce exhaustive projects.

We will accept multiple journalists from the same newsroom.  We welcome journalism educators and grad students!

Price: $300.00

APPLY NOW-CLICK HERE (the link will ask you to get a Poynter account, which takes 10 seconds or so, quick and easy.  If you have a Poynter.org account, then just use it. Then fill out the application.  We do not need you to send us story samples or do anything very time consuming in this application. You will get an acceptance note from us usually within 24 hours. If you need urgent attention to your application or have questions, call Al Tompkins 727-409-9717 or email atompkins@poynter.org.)

Investigating Charities and Non-Profits
Kris and her colleagues investigated the "Worst Charities in America" and found many big name, big budget charities spend the majority of their income on paid solicitors, not on carrying out the mission on which the charity was founded. The methods she used on that big project can be easily applied to everyday reporting on charities in any city.

Ten Ways to Tell a Story: Getting Beyond the Ordinary
Once you have published your story in print or aired a story on TV or radio, now what?
We will show you ten tools you can use to EXTEND your story beyond the legacy media you use to engage the audience in photos, videos, interactives, graphics, slideshows, audio, stills, user-contributed content, games and social media. We will push you to think of "publishing" your story as the first step and not the LAST on ONLY step. And yes, we will keep it real, knowing that you may have limited time, resources and even skills.  We will show you big ideas that will inspire you and smaller ideas that you can use right away.
